Libraries Ban 'Dragon Ball' In Wicomico County, Maryland
Date: 10/22/2009
The Wicomico County, Maryland school district has removed all copies of the Dragon Ball manga series from its library shelves in elementary, middle, and high schools in the district, according to WBOC. The action was taken after a County Council member brought pages of a Dragon Ball volume to a Council meeting and demanded action (see ?Dragon Ball Library Controversy?) after a nine-year-old checked out a Dragon Ball volume with material deemed inappropriate. The school district reviewed the volumes, recommended the removal, and School Superintendent John Fredericksen agreed and ordered the removal.

The district did become aware that the books were intended for young adults during the review process, according to the report, but still decided to remove the books from high school shelves as well for reasons that were not explained. Superintendent Frederickson did defend the use of graphic novels as an educational tool, according to the report.
