Blu-ray Sales Push 'Up' to the Top Wal-Mart Offering $78 BD Player
Date: 11/19/2009
Sales of the 4-disc Blu-ray edition of Pixar?s Up helped push 2009?s best-reviewed blockbuster to the top of the DVD sales charts in its first week of release. BD discs accounted for 24% of the sales of Up, the highest percentage ever for a ?family? film. Pixar also released a 4-disc Blu-ray edition of its 2001 release Monsters, Inc., which came in at #2 on the Blu-ray chart, and sold enough BD copies (there was no regular DVD re-release accompanying the Blu-ray) to end up at #6 on the overall DVD top ten for the week.

The stellar performances of Up and Monsters, Inc. on Blu-ray (see reviews in ?November 10th DVD Round-Up?) demonstrate the increasing penetration of the new hi-def format, something that is only going to grow during the current holiday season as more and more households acquire BD players. Wal-Mart has already announced a Black Friday sale on a Magnavox Blu-ray player, which will be available for just $78. Analysts believe that players priced under $100 will lead to widespread adoption of the format, which is also tied in with sales of large flat screen hi-def TVs. By this time next year we could be seeing Blu-ray discs accounting for as much as 50% of sales on certain key titles.

Up sold 5 million discs in its first six days, which already puts it in fourth place in 2009 DVD sales behind Twilight (9.3 million), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (7.5 million) and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (7 million). Look for Up to move up the charts since Pixar films tend to have great ?legs? on DVD. Pixar?s Wall-E sold 7.4 million units in 2008 and another 1.5 million this year.

Last week Up sold six times as many DVDs as its closest competitor, The Ugly Truth. However,The Ugly Truth, like that popular, but trashy girl in high school that you only wanted to date once, did finish first in DVD rentals for the week.
