Weekend Spending Flat People Up, Tickets Down
Date: 11/30/2009
The holiday weekend generated $41 billion, almost exactly the same sales as the same weekend a year ago, according to a National Retail Federation consumer survey, with a larger number of people shopping but buying less per person than a year ago. The number of shoppers was up to 195 million, from 172 million last year; spending $343.31 per person, down from $372.57 last year.

Among categories tied to pop culture stores, around a third of shoppers purchased toys, up around 13% from a year ago; and 40% of shoppers purchased books, unchanged from 2008.

Of course, being flat with 2008 is not particularly great given that Thanksgiving 2008 was in the depths of the global financial crisis and sales were already depressed.
