Takara and Tomy, two of Japan's largest toy makers, have stated that they are in talks to merge, creating what will be Japan's second largest toy maker and 4th largest "toy and game maker."

The Nihon Keizai newspaper, which cited no sources, also reports that the companies may expand into producing online games based on their characters.

Takara, Japan's second largest toy manufacturer after Bandai, and fifth largest "toy and game maker" is also the owner of Broccoli, which in turns own North American anime distributor Synch-Point.

Tomy is Japan's third largest toy maker and 7th largest "toy and game maker."

The two companies have market values of 46.2 billion yen (US$433 million) and 40.4 billion yen (US$379 million) respectively.

The combined company would have combined annual sales of 180 billion yen (US$1.7 billion).
