'Rio' Flies, 'Scream' Dies 'Super' Isn't
Date: 4/18/2011
The Fox animated film Rio topped the box office with an estimated $40 million, while the attempt to resurrect the Scream franchise met with resistance from audiences as the fourth film in the series opened with less than half of the total of the third. Rio scored the best opening so far in 2011 and the box office was up 12% over the same weekend a year ago when Kick-Ass debuted with $19.5 million. But it is a little too soon to consider this year?s anemic box office cured. Rio?s opening was only mediocre for a major animated release, especially given the 3-D ticket surcharges?and being the #1 film in 2011 doesn't exactly confer superstar status.

Rio has done better overseas where it has brought in $169 million, but its domestic opening was well below that of previous efforts from Blue Sky Studios such as Ice Age or Robots. The opening weekend audience for Rio was 53% female and 50% under 25. With no new family films opening in the next few weeks Rio could build on its solid but less -han-ideal domestic opening, especially since audiences gave it an ?A? CinemaScore.

The same sort of prospect does not appear to be there for Scream 4, the first new film in the franchise in 11 years. In spite of holding forth on more than 4,400 screens, Scream 4?s opening was on a par with that of Sucker Punch, and far below that of Scream 3, which earned $34.7 million in its 2000 debut, a total that would be more than 52 million when adjusted for ticket price inflation. Scream 4 managed to attract a nicely balanced audience (52% female, 54% under 25), just not enough of them?and its ?B-? CinemaScore does bode well for the future.

A number of holdover films did OK starting with Hop which fell just 48% in its third weekend, while the Christian-themed Soul Surfer dipped just 30%, and the female assassin feature Hanna declined just 41%. Arthur managed a pretty good hold, declining just 43%, but the horror film Insidious (-26.8%) and the sci-fi thriller Source Code (-27.2%) did even better.

Robert Redford?s The Conspirator opened in just over 700 theaters, but still made the Top Ten thanks to the third best per theater average in the top 10.

The quirky medieval comedy Your Highness (Dark Horse has a tie-in comic) followed up its less than stellar opening with a 58.6% drop that sent it hurtling down to number ten.

In extremely limited release the bloody superhero-themed comedy Super starring Rann Wilson and Ellen Page, fizzled with a pitiful $1,500 per theater average.
