Upcoming Astonishing X-Men Marriage Receives Massive Media Attention
Date: 5/24/2012
Northstar, the mutant superhero, made a big splash in 1992 when he declared: ?I am gay.? Twenty years later the Marvel Comics hero is making news again. In issue No. 50 of ?Astonishing X-Men,? on sale Wednesday, Northstar will propose to Kyle, his longtime boyfriend, and in the next issue, on sale in June, they will get married.

The news was officially announced Tuesday on ?The View? on ABC, but it has been the subject of fan speculation for some time. Axel Alonso, the editor in chief of Marvel Entertainment, said the story line was discussed shortly after New York State legalized gay marriage in June 2011. ?Most of our characters reside in New York State,? he said. ?Our stories work best when we reconcile drama with the real world, so it raised questions.? The issue is written by Marjorie Liu and illustrated by Mike Perkins.

Over the weekend news reports surfaced saying that DC Comics, which revamped all its major heroes last fall, would soon introduce a previously existing straight character as gay. Dan DiDio, the co-publisher of DC Comics, with Jim Lee, said at a convention in London that the character would be ?one of our most prominent gay characters.? Fan speculation on bleedingcool.com, a news, rumor and gossip site, was immediate and included the usual (?Is Batman finally finding the way out of the closet??) and the reasonably clever (?Martian MANHUNTER?). DC?s most prominent gay characters currently include Batwoman, who stars in her own series and came out in 2006; Apollo and Midnighter, who are analogues of Superman and Batman, and appear monthly in Stormwatch; and Bunker, a member of the Teen Titans.
