Most Popular Japanese Words Of 2005

A good cultural snapshot of what ideas are floating about in a society's mass consciousness at any time are the popular words it's people happen to be using. JIYUKOKUMINSHA keeps tabs on these things and released a list of 60 new words it considers to be the most important to emerge in Japan over the year. Web visitors are asked to vote on these words so an actual list of importance by nomination can finally be created. So what made the list? There's a good mix here of new slang, government related and technology related terms and surprisingly a lot of offerings from the otaku / anime and manga realms as well. For fun, just read the list verbatim at first and see which words you recognize (I think a good many of you will be surprised at just how many you already know).
