Fujiko F. Fujio Museum and Documentary Date: 2/21/2006 |

$10 million Museum to be Built in Tama Ward by 2010 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Kawasaki Municipal Government, the Fujiko Production company and the widow of Fujiko F. Fujio, have announced plans to build a Fujiko F. Fujio Museum* in Tama Ward by 2010. The museum will display over 40,000 items related to the late creator of Doraemon. The Fujiko Production company will build the museum and donate it to the city. Total cost for the museum is expected to be between 1 billion and 1.5 billion yen (US$8.4 million to US$12.6 billion). 500,000 visitors are expected annually. Fujiko F. Fujio, whose real name Hiroshi Fujimoto, died in 1996 at age 62. Fujimoto was half of Fujiko Fujio, a moniker used by Fujimoto and his school friend Motoo Abiko. As Fujiko Fujio, the pair created many of Japan's most popular manga, including Doraemon and Obake no Q-Taro. In 1987 the pair split. Motoo Abiko continued under the name of "Fujiko Fujio (A)" and Hiroshi Fujimoto under the name of "Fujiko Fujio (F)", later renamed to "Fujiko F. Fujio". Thanks to Joe Luscik for this item. It has also been announced that a documentary about Fujiko F. Fujio, narrated by Maki Mizuno, will be aired on TV shortly. The Documentary will look at numerous letters written by Fujiko F. Fujio, as well as interview people who knew him. * The Japanese term used is "Kinnenkan" which is literally translated as "Memorial Hall." A more practical translation however is "Museum." For example Tezuka Osamu Kinenkan is officially known in English as the The Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum. |
