eBay to cut listing fees
Date: 1/31/2008
eBay announced this week that it will cut its listing fees by as much as 50 percent in an effort to boost listings. In exchange for the reduction in fees, eBay said it will increase its commission on items that do sell.

The company said sellers have suggested they would prefer a trade off of lower fees and higher commissions because it lowers their risk if items do not sell. For items that sell for more than $25, eBay's cut will jump to 8.75 percent of the final sale price.

The new fee structuregoes into effect Feb. 20 in the United States. In its most recent financial report, eBay said listings on its various sites rose 4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008, reversing two straight quarters of declines.

eBay announced last week that longtime CEO Meg Whitman will leave her post March 31. She will be succeeded by John Donahoe, who has been heading eBay's core auction and e-commerce business.
