Sentencing Delayed in Retailer Trial George's Attorneys Ask Judge to Overrule Jury
Date: 4/8/2008
According to the Macomb Daily, comic retailer Michael George's sentencing in a sensational "cold case" murder trial, which was originally scheduled for April 22nd, has been pushed back to sometime after May 6th so that Judge James Biernat can consider a motion filed by George's attorneys seeking to overturn the jury's verdict that found George guilty of killing his wife Barbara in 1990 (see "Comic Retailer Convicted").

Earlier in the trial the judge turned down a defense motion for a directed verdict, which makes the chance of his overturning the verdict now appear even less likely. The judge will rule on the defense motion on April 25th.

George's attorneys have indicated that if judge rejects their motion and George is sentenced to life imprisonment (which is mandatory in Michigan for a first degree murder convictions), they will ask for a new trial, which means that this case is far from over.
