SCOTTSDALE- Huilin Dai is a typical 18-year-old high school student with a flair for painting with watercolors.

She likes to hang out at the mall with her friends, play on her computer and listen to music.

But just three years ago, Dai moved to this country from her native Yulin, China, where getting an "A" in school was nearly impossible, and students were less likely to be outgoing and social, she said. advertisement

"I like the personality of American kids," Dai said.

For Dai, attending school in the United States has been difficult at times as she adjusted to a new language, new culture and new lifestyle, but she is looking forward to continuing her schooling in the States even after she graduates from Saguaro High School in May.

"I like the freedom (in schools)," she said.

NAME: Huilin Dai.

AGE: 18.

GRADE: Senior.

SCHOOL: Saguaro High School.

ACTIVITIES: Art Club.

MY DREAM JOB IS: To be a graphic designer or an animation editor.

FAVORITE MOVIE: Finding Nemo.

FAVORITE MUSIC: Punk music; Goldfinger and Green Day.

FAVORITE THING TO PAINT: People, especially beauties.

FAVORITE PIECE OF ART: It's a watercolor painting with a woman's portrait and a whole background of butterflies. Most of my friends said this painting is the turning point of my watercolor; it has my own style. I published it on a Chinese Web site for an online art competition and I won second place.

ON SELLING HER PIECE: It was so exciting, and I couldn't believe that I sold a painting.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU PAINT: Depends, if I am very bored, or my friends' birthdays are coming up, I will do more. Frequently, I use computer software to do two to five doodles within a week.

I'M MOST INSPIRED BY: Jan Fabian Wallake; she is such an amazing watercolor painter. Gustav Klimt, I love his art style.

IF I COULD MEET ANYONE IN THE WORLD IT WOULD BE: Hayao Miyazaki, the editor of Spirited Away (a Japanese anime movie). He's my favorite animation editor, and I hope one day I can go to Japan to study his animation.

AFTER HIGH SCHOOL, I WOULD LIKE TO: Go to ASU, for sure.

LONGEST AMOUNT OF TIME SPENT ON A PAINTING: Two to three months, but I hate that painting . . . two to three days would be the best amount of time for my painting because I am a very anxious person. If a painting takes too long, it will lose my original idea.
