Gwen Stefani Property Gets Sanrio Deal
Date: 6/16/2005
'Harajuku Lovers'

June 16, 2005
No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, whose hit debut album Love, Angel, Music, Baby has a track called "Harajuku Girls," and whose live act uses four Asian backup dancers called the "Harajuku Girls," has signed a deal with Hello Kitty powerhouse Sanrio for a new property called Harajuku Lovers. Fashion and accessory products will be launched this summer.

Harajuku is, of course, the shopping and entertainment district in Tokyo that's the new haunt of coolhunters from fashion houses around the world. Stefani's been talking about her fascination with Japanese pop culture in TV appearances, and her deal with Sanrio cements the connection.

The Harajuku Lovers line is going to be characterized by "a fatal attraction to cuteness," so should appeal to a similar demographic (that is, girls and women of all ages) to that of Sanrio's massive Hello Kitty line.

The first product is an HP digital camera.
