'Battle Royale' Won't Happen 'Hunger Games' Gets Oxygen

The remake of Battle Royale, which went into development in 2006 (see ?Battle Royale Remake?) will probably not get made, producer Roy Lee told Movieweb. The Hunger Games, which is getting a strong run-up to release (see ??Hunger Games? Trailer?), has a similar storyline and ?definitely took a lot of the wind out of the sails,? Lee said. The Battle Royale manga and films tell the story of a future annual battle between the members of a high school class placed on an abandoned island to fight it out in a game of survival. Hunger Games is set in a world where each of twelve districts in a post-apocalyptic North America send a boy and a girl to fight to the death in a televised competition.
