Brand Cuts Would be a Welcome Change
Date: 3/20/2008
Nearly half the hobby retailers who took part in Card Trade magazine's annual survey said the number of card products on the market is still too high and that more brand reductions should be made.

The survey found that 48.5 percent of respondents said they believe additional cuts need to be made. Only 12.1 percent of respondents said they would like to see additional brands added to the card market. Meanwhile, 39.4 percent believe the current number of product offerings is adequate.

Brand proliferation was cited by many retailers earlier this decade as a key reason why the hobby was rapidly losing its customer base. Baseball and hockey each decided to eliminate licensees in 2005 and football and basketball did not replace a licensee after Fleer ceased operations that same year. Baseball further reduced its brand count this season, going from 40 brands the past two years to 34 this season.
