Gorillaz Creator Honored
Date: 5/27/2006
AWN reports Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett has been named Britain's designer of the year for his groundbreaking animation for the virtual band. Hewlett, who first earned fame for co-creating the comicstrip, TANK GIRL, won the award May 22, 2006, in a ceremony at the Design Museum. He was honored for conceiving the graphics, animation and "live" performances for the band, which is composed of four animated, fictional members. Hewlett co-formed the Gorillaz with Blur singer Damon Albarn. The virtual band's albums include the self-titled, "Gorillaz," and "Demon Days." In an interview with Wired magazine the creator revealed his anime influences: " I took a lot of influences from Studio Ghibli, which is the Japanese animation studio that made Spirited Away and Castle in the Sky. They're like the Japanese version of Disney - but without all the schmaltz. They make beautiful films that are also a bit dark, which is how I want Gorillaz animation to turn out."
