Sony Sells Off Magazine / Book Publishing
Date: 5/27/2006
On May 23rd in Japan Sony announced it has sold the division responsible for select magazines and books (including paperbacks and light novels) to We've Inc. The transfer price was undecided. We've has said they will establish a subsidiary company to specifically handle their new publication business. In the past We've has been responsible for anime production, broadcast collaborations and organizing events related to anime and SFX. It's worth noting We've had also worked with Sony in the past on putting together the now defunct Anime X Magazine. Starting in March, 1998 as a CD-ROM only publication, the magazine was discontinued shortly after going to print follwoing Sony's move to withdraw in October, 2001. Besides being about news and info, AX saw the birth of several popular manga in it's pages such as Yoshitoshi Abe's Serial Experiments Lain. No word as of yet if We've could pick up the publication of that title or go forward with any new anime magazine. Sony had just started up it's new pocket edition label for young women this spring.
