Japan Spent 94 Billion Yen on Anime DVDs in 2006

The Japan Video Software Association reports that Japanese anime DVDs earned 93,772,000,000 yen (about US$791 million) within Japan in 2006, an 2.4% increase over last year. That represents part of the 325,280,000,00 yen (about US$2.74 billion) spent in the overall DVD market. Animation DVD rentals rose, but retail sales dropped. By comparison, the Computer Entertainment Suppliers Association reports that Japanese video game sofware earned about 311.3 billion yen (about US$2.6 billion) within Japan in 2006.
