Date: 2/17/2005
A great piece with lots of interesting figures has been published at J-Marketing.net. Much of this has been reported in the past but the article condenses it all rather nicely.
Across the United States during 2004, one could find an anime fan event going on in at least one location every month. More than 20 such events are held every year, together attracting over 100,000 visitors, a number nearly rivaling the core anime fan base in Japan, the estimated size of which is 50,000 to 100,000 people. According to a study by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Japanese anime sales, including anime character products, in the United States in 2002 surpassed the 520 billion yen. Mr. Masaki Kaifu of Wowmax Media who assisted the study and conducts anime-related business in the United States says that sales figure grew in 2003 by another 60 billion yen, and products based on characters from Japan are always very popular.
