Urban Vision Releasing 'Azumi 2' Live Action Ninja Film
Date: 4/1/2008
Urban Vision is planning a May release for Azumi 2 (MSRP $24.95), the second film in a series based on the popular 39-volume manga series by Yu Koyama about a beautiful female ninja caught up in a web of assassination and revenge in feudal Japan. Once again the beautiful Aya Ueto returns in the title role of Azumi, the fearless ninja who manages to survive because of her bodhisattva-like otherworldly detachment and her considerable martial arts skills. Shusuke Kaneko, who directed the both of the stylish Death Note live action films, also helmed Azumi 2.

Azumi 2 was released in Japan in 2005 by Toho and features a screenplay by Rikya Mizushima and Yoshiaki Kawajiri, director of such anime classics as Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Ninja Scroll, Wicked City, and "The Program" segment of the Animatrix. Kawajiri also recently helmed the Highlander: Vengeance anime feature for Manga Entertainment.

Although the 112-minute Azumi 2 is not rated, it is recommended for mature audiences because, like the first Azumi film (also released here by Urban Vision), it features a considerable body count and plentiful violence. The Azumi 2 DVD includes a featurette, "Through the Eyes of Azumi" along with an image gallery as well as both a dubbed English vocal track and the original Japanese language track with English subtitles.
