Inkworks Keeps Things Simple With 'Kung Fu Panda' Product
Date: 4/24/2008
Inkworks' newest card release, based on the upcoming DreamWorks film Kung Fu Panda, has a retro element to it. Not in the design or content of the cards, but the fact the product does not include any autograph, memorabilia or sketch cards. Its basic lineup harkens back to 1995 when he began the company ? a 50-card base set, nine Sparkly stickers (one per pack), six die-cut cards and eight lenticular cards. Packs are $1.99 each. The cards and the movie will both be released next month.

"DreamWorks doesn't like you to go after any of the actors," said Caplan, explaining why there will not be signed cards in the product. "It's hands off."

And because this is an animated movie, there are no costumes available for Pieceworks cards. "The panda wanted to give me his clothes (for Pieceworks cards), but they wanted them for the sequel," Caplan joked. "Quite frankly, this is a product that fans and collectors will like, not eBayers. But this is what trading cards should be. They are fun. The lenticulars are very cool and the die-cuts are nice. It makes one beautiful set."

There are many reasons why Caplan believes Kung Fu Panda is going to become DreamWorks' next Shrek-type franchise. Jack Black, who provides the voice for the panda, is one of them, as is the humor found in the movie. According to Caplan, just having Black's name associated with the movie will get kids into the theater to watch the movie, and that's good for the hobby, too.

"Producing a set like this is the only way to bring in the younger collectors to the hobby. Kids that are 9, 10 and 11 years old will like this set. Let the kids be kids as long as they can. If a kid is 9 years old now, by the time he is 19, he won't know there are entertainment trading cards unless we get stuff into the marketplace."
