Mass Media Review Roundup Of Graphic Novels
Date: 6/8/2009
Two major reviews in mass circulation print media have the potential to drive sales in the coming weeks. The bigger play was given to Sean Howe?s review of David Mazzuccchelli?s Asterios Polyp in this week?s Entertainment Weekly, which led the book section with an ?A? review. Calling it ?sprawling, trippy, moving, and a hell of a lot of fun,? Howe says Asterios Polyp is ??as if John Updike had discovered a bag of art supplies and LSD.? Asterios Polyp will be released by Pantheon as a 344-page hardcover on July 7th.

The New York Times Review of Books gave Douglas Wolk?s review of Carol Tyler's You?ll Never Know a full page on page 8. That was room enough for Wolk to like both the story (?You?ll Never Know unfolds like a Rambling reminiscence, except without the boring parts?) and the art (?Every panel is lush with visual and psychological detail. Her swooping ink lines have the fluidity and force of paint.?), both by Carol Tyler in the recently released graphic novel from Fantagraphics. This Volume 1 in a planned three tells the story of the writer?s father, who finally began revealing his memories of World War II in 2002. This $24.99 hardcover was released April 29th.
